Students from a broad range of scientific disciplines entered the Science Poster Competition in hopes of winning a cash prize of $200.00. The 2003 Student Science Poster Competition was sponsored by Pierce Biotechnology, Inc, Kimberly-Clark Company and the Biotechnology Center Placement Office. A preliminary judging took place on Monday, January 27, 2003. Dr. Art Zangerl and Dr. Michel Bellini evaluated the undergraduate students while Dr. Joanna Shisler and Dr. James Slauch reviewed the graduate posters. Five finalists were each selected from the undergraduate and graduate category.

On January 30, 2003, the finalists were juried by the graduate judging team consisting of Dr. Jonathan Sweedler, Director of the Biotechnology Center, Dr. Corey Cunningham of Kimberly-Clark, Dr. Kim Hines of Pierce Biotechnology, Inc., and Daniel LoTurco, UIUC graduate student and the undergraduate judging team comprised of Dr. Fred Delcomyn, Director of the School of Integrative Biology, Mr. Jeff King of Kimberly-Clark, Mr. Joseph LaPointe of Pierce Biotechnology, Inc., and Jennifer Nuessen, UIUC graduate student.

Posters were evaluated for visual and verbal presentation, experimental design, relevance, and the student's ability to answer questions and clearly explain their work. The 10 finalists displayed their posters at the Biotech Job Fair luncheon attended by company recruiters. The winners were announced and the finalists were awarded $20.00 gift certificates and the winners will each receive a check for $200.00.

We would like to thank Mr. Jeff King of Kimberly-Clark and Mr. Joseph LaPointe of Pierce Biotechnology, Inc., for their generous support of this event.
